Oxygen: This is important to add in organisms in the compost pile.

Temperature: This is very important in the decomposing stage. Place the pile in a position where it will get maximum sunlight.
If your heap is made correctly, it should generate its own heat so the need for warmth isnt so important.

Moisture: When building a compost pile its important to water each layer as it goes on. If your heap gets too dry the microbial activity can die off. Just as important, you should not water your pile too much either or the same result will happen as it would if the pile was too dry.

The smaller the pieces of materials you put on your compost pile, the faster it will mature.

Materials with a relatively high water level such as grass clippings or vegetable scraps should be placed in with other materials that hold a lesser amount of water, like dry leaves, paper or straw etc. These meterials should be spread evenly throughout the pile.

Who else can add to this?
